They got settled down in a minute or two, and the game began. 

Alice thought she had never seen such a curious croquet-ground in her life : 

it was all ridges and furrows ; 

the croquet-balls were live hedgehogs, the mallets live flamingoes, 

and the soldiers had to double themselves up 

and to stand on their hands and feet, to make the arches. 

The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo : 

she succeeded in getting its body tucked away, comfortably enough, under her arm, 

with its legs hanging down, but generally, just as she had got its neck nicely straightened out, and was going to give the hedgehog a blow with its head, 

it would twist itself round and look up into her face, 

with such a puzzled expression that she could not help bursting out laughing.

Unos minutos después ocupaban sus sitios, y empezó el partido. 

Alicia pensó que no había visto un campo de croquet tan raro como aquél en toda su vida. Estaba lleno de montículos y de surcos. 

Las bolas eran erizos vivos, los mazos eran flamencos vivos, 

y los soldados tenían que doblarse y ponerse a cuatro patas para formar los aros.

La dificultad más grave con que Alicia se encontró al principio fue manejar a su flamenco. Logró dominar al pajarraco metiéndoselo debajo del brazo, con las patas colgando detrás, pero casi siempre, cuando había logrado enderezarle el largo cuello y estaba a punto de darle un buen golpe al erizo con la cabeza del flamenco, éste torcía el cuello y la miraba derechamente a los ojos con tanta extrañeza, que Alicia no podía contener la risa.
